6 Challenges PA School Applicants Face

  • CHALLENGE #1

Misunderstanding admission criteria for PA programs.

  • CHALLENGE #2

Focusing on areas that don’t significantly strengthen your application.

  • CHALLENGE #3

Underpreparing for crucial Pre-Interview Assessments like CASPer or Kira Talent.

  • CHALLENGE #4

Submitting a generic written application that fails to adequately answer the prompt.

  • CHALLENGE #5

Lack of confidence in the effectiveness of MMI Interview prep and practice.

  • CHALLENGE #6

Lack of feedback from PA programs after rejection, leaving you guessing on what to improve for next time.

PA school admission is competitive in Canada

Navigating the journey to PA school can feel overwhelming. But you don’t have to do it alone.

From meeting admission requirements like GPA and relevant experience, to completing assessments such as the Casper test or Kira Talent, securing strong references, crafting compelling responses… to written PA school application prompts, and ultimately acing your MMI interview. It's a lot to manage while balancing your personal life, professional and family responsibilities!

We understand how tough this process can be. Many applicants compare their progress to others, or attempt to second-guess what admissions committees are looking for, which can lead to uncertainty and generic applications that don’t showcase your unique strengths.

We’ve worked with Pre-PA students who have sought feedback from friends, family, peers, advisors and even other health care providers, that although well-intentioned, lack:

(1) the expertise and perspective needed to truly understand what it takes to succeed in a rigorous PA education curriculum and

(2) the nuances of working as a PA within the Canadian healthcare system.

With our Pre-PA coaching, we specialize in navigating the specific challenges of PA school admissions. Let us help you refine your application, highlight your true potential and position yourself as a strong candidate!

PRE-PA MENTOR & COACH

I’m a Canadian trained and certified Physician Assistant with over 10 years in Orthopaedic Surgery and a background in teaching, mentoring, and PA advocacy. I know what it’s like to navigate the competitive PA admissions process, and I’ve helped many pre-PAs strengthen their applications and interview skills.

Through personalized coaching, editing services, and mock MMI prep, I provide practical guidance tailored to your needs. My goal is to help you feel prepared, confident, and ready to present your best self as you pursue a career as a PA in Canada making a difference in the lives of patients.

I'm a Canadian Certified Physician Assistant working full time in internal medicine and casually in emergency medicine in Toronto, Ontario. I graduated from University of Toronto's BScPA program in 2022 with the highest GPA in my graduating class.

I have years of experience teaching and coaching students, including pre-PA students, as they navigate the Canadian PA application process. During my 2020 admission cycle, I received acceptance offers from both Ontario PA programs. I understand the value of preparing for multiple mini interviews and Kira Talent, and I offer invaluable insight for applicants looking to improve their interviewing skills.

Testimonials

  • "Overall, I feel 1,000x more confident with my statement and feel that it accurately showcases my desire to become a PA.

I had a phenomenal experience with the editing service as they really focused on providing suggestions of how to change and provided reasons why rather than just making changes themselves. I preferred it as it helps with other applications and makes you think a different way about how you answer questions.

Not only were you provided thorough details of constructive criticism, you also got told what areas were done well and how they can be further improved.

I really enjoyed that there was a structure in the feedback as well, where each feedback is separated by different suggestions.

I would highly recommend this service to others where possible. It helps with fine-tuning and provides perspective from PAs who have gone through the programs and know what they are looking for.”

  • "I can't thank them enough for their help and I 110% recommend this service to any pre-PA that is looking for comprehensive and professional feedback. If you’re contemplating using this service, I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Anne and her team of pre-PA coaches delivered a very high-quality editing service for the PA Supplemental Application. They provide a thorough line-by-line assessment of grammar, spelling, flow and overall content, with a detailed explanation of suggestions and how you can take your response to the next level.

As practicing Canadian PAs, Anne and the coaches have great insight on how to highlight your unique characteristics and personal experiences that admissions programs will look for in a PA applicant.

This service really helped me tie all of my ideas together in a way that reflects both my personality and the CanMEDS competencies effectively. Anne and her team even include a graded rubric that helps guide you on how to perfect your application.

After using the editing service, Anne and the coaches are quick to send back their edits and always willing to answer additional questions by email. I can’t thank them enough for their help and I 110% recommend this service to any pre-PA that is looking for comprehensive and professional feedback. If you’re contemplating using this service, I promise you won’t be disappointed!”

  • "Anne's support truly made a difference. With her guidance, I tackled the preparation process confidently, avoiding the usual anxiety that comes with it. I can't emphasize enough how much Anne's help meant to me, and I would recommend her wholeheartedly to anyone looking for a reliable prep partner. Thank you, Anne, for being instrumental in my journey.

Working with Anne has truly been a blessing. Having engaged in several other prep sessions with different individuals before, I always received rather generic assistance. However, Anne's approach was refreshingly warm, welcoming, and accommodating from the very start.

Preparing with someone unfamiliar can be daunting, but Anne quickly established herself as a safe haven-a non-judgmental presence always ready to support and guide. What truly stood out was Anne's unwavering commitment to my success. She invested considerable time and effort in providing detailed feedback, demonstrating a genuine interest in my growth.

It's evident that she sees your achievements as her own, making her an invaluable asset in the prep process. With her wealth of knowledge and extensive teaching experience, Anne went beyond the role of an instructor, rather she had the qualities of a mentor and leader. Under Anne's guidance, I experienced so much growth within just a few sessions.

Her approach to preparation, diving deep into structures and strategies for different scenarios, was so important in my journey toward confidence and proficiency. Importantly, Anne's perspective as a PA ensured that her feedback was not only insightful but also aligned with the expectations of admissions committees-a level of expertise that sometimes well-meaning advice from family members.”

  • "I can confidently say that this service helped me address the areas I was struggling in my responses and I ended up submitting an application I am truly proud of.

I found this service online through PA profiles I follow on Instagram and as a first-time applicant, I wanted to ensure my application demonstrated my best work. I had completed my written responses prior to this but was struggling with displaying all the attributes I wanted in a concise way.

The coaches gave suggestions on what I could improve on, highlighting the importance of being purposeful in my responses and ensuring that what was written answered the questions effectively. After receiving the revisions, I took time to rework my responses, taking out information that didn’t help strengthen my arguments and adding aspects of the CanMEDSPA competencies to truly demonstrate why I am a good candidate.

I ended up keeping my original work as a reference to see improvements, the responses are more focused, truly demonstrating my own attributes and why I want to become a PA.”

  • "Working with Anne was a game-changer for me! I wholeheartedly recommend her services to every pre-PA out there! Thank you Anne, for your support and for making this step of the application process less daunting!

She provided line-by-line edits, which brought a level of professionalism to my CV that I never thought possible. Her attention to detail exceeded my expectations.

She provided examples, making the entire process clearer and more constructive.

Her familiarity with the University of Manitoba requirements was especially reassuring, ensuring that my CV aligns perfectly with the necessary standards.

My advice for other pre-PAs is to start your draft and connect with Anne early. The application cycle goes by very quickly so you want to give yourself enough time to write a personal statement and CV that you are proud of!”

  • "I could not be more grateful for my experience working with Anne! She was able to guide me throughout my MMI preparation, where our collaborative hard work and dedication led to myself receiving acceptances to BOTH of the PA programs I had applied to. I would 100% recommend any of Anne’s services to any Pre-PAs that find themselves struggling through the application process, whether that be from lack of confidence, imposter syndrome, or trouble with expressing their thoughts and experiences.

Prior to my MMI coaching sessions, I felt extremely discouraged about my interview skills, as I was not confident in my McMaster Supplemental application interview. I felt as though my thoughts were disorganized and I came off nervous and unconfident. This took a major toll on me because I knew I needed to shine on my MMI’s to be able to secure a spot in either of the programs I applied to (UofT and McMaster).

I was fortunate enough to receive MMI invites from both schools so I knew Anne would be the best person to reach out to for MMI prep. I chose to work with Anne because she is extremely knowledgeable in this field and has always been a true inspiration of mine. She is a phenomenal advocate of this growing profession in Canada and I truly feel she had a significant impact on my Pre-PA journey.

When working with Anne, she was always extremely professional, but also very personable and warm. I felt no judgement when speaking with her and she was able to cater to my specific needs when it came to interview preparation. I appreciated her extremely detailed feedback on MMI questions I had sent to her, along with her live feedback during our meetings.

She was always extremely open and honest when providing this feedback, where she would give me both words of encouragement and point out things she appreciated in my responses, but also gave me constructive criticism and additional sources to further improve my answers for next time.

Anyone considering one of Anne’s services can expect to receive high-quality advice from an extremely knowledgeable person in this field. Prior to meeting with Anne, I believe the best way to prepare is by reflecting on your work/ life experiences that have brought you to where you are today, while also conducting some research on the MMI and current world events.

Overall, I feel beyond blessed to have been recognized by both PA schools and for that I cannot express how thankful I am for Anne’s support and guidance throughout my Pre-PA journey.”

  • "Thanks to the great mentoring that I had from Canadian PA I was able to successfully get into all three Canadian PA schools this year!

I used the coaching service this application cycle after being unsuccessful in the interview process during previous years.

The coaching service was a great tool to help me practice MMI-style questions as well as receive feedback on what I could do to improve my performance. Additionally, the recorded video feedback that was accessible after the session was great a great aid to refer back to.

would highly recommend this service for anyone who needs that extra bit of help for their applications or is unsure on how to improve their performance. Thank you Canadian PA!”

  • "Highly recommend! Each draft boosted my confidence, and I was extremely happy and proud with my final answers.

I had a great experience with Anne to help edit and review my mini-essay questions. As a first-time applicant to the UofT program, I wanted to ensure that I was conveying my experiences and skillset in a clear and concise way.

Anne helped me reflect more on my experiences, identify key aspects to highlight and focus on, and provided great constructive feedback. . Anne was very thoughtful in her review and feedback, and sent each draft back in a very timely manner (especially during a very stressful time period).”

“Her expertise and knowledge paired with her patience and care made for a pleasant experience! I highly recommend using Anne for your edits. She is efficient and awesome to work with.

  • "I appreciated how Anne went above and beyond to help me prepare for my MMI and Panel Interview, including answering all of my questions by email and ensuring I felt confident on the day of my interviews! It was evident that she wanted me to succeed and that gave me incredible confidence going into my interviews.

Prior to working with Anne during the 4 weeks of MMI Coaching I was very nervous about the structure of my MMI responses and how to navigate changing my response times based on the requirements from different schools. I was also quite concerned about making my responses exceptional in order to secure an acceptance into the PA program.

By working with Anne, I have successfully learned how to modify the structure of my response based on the time allotted and have gained immense confidence by doing so.

I knew I wanted to work with Anne since she is well-known for her PA advocacy work through her social media accounts, but also I found her supportive and caring personality really resonated with the way I best receive feedback.

By working with Anne you can expect an individualized plan based on your weaknesses and a strong mentor to guide you through the process of preparing for the MMI. I also would expect to spend at least 1 hour per day on MMI preparation during this period in order to make the most out of Anne’s feedback and recommendations.

I would recommend completing all of the necessary reading (Doing Right, BeMo’s Ultimate Guide to the MMI, and other materials) prior to the start of your coaching. I would also recommend taking advantage of access to Anne’s MMI Online Course earlier on during your 4 weeks of coaching so you have enough time to practice prior to the MMI.

I personally liked scheduling my Mock MMI 2 weeks out from my interview to give me sufficient time to make any corrections without feeling stressed about my upcoming interview. I have truly enjoyed Anne’s 4 weeks of MMI Coaching and would strongly recommend this service to anyone who has the time and extra resources to prepare for the MMI.”

  • "My experience working with Anne changed how I will approach future letters of intent, cover letters, and resumes. She taught me about how to be confident in my word choices, and importantly how to share my passion for the field. If anyone is struggling with writing their letter of intent and is looking for someone to work with, I highly recommend Anne.

Working with Anne this application round was incredible. She helped me reflect and recognize where I could expand on my experiences, and importantly how they tied to my ultimate goal, to become a physician assistant.”

  • "The Edit & Review service experience was beneficial and lessened my anxiety of always overthinking my answers. It helped me put the pieces of the puzzles together, and I integrated every feedback I received. Thus, I felt very confident in my response at the end. Also, I was very surprised with the detailed feedback and the marking scheme that was used.

Applying to the UofT Program with a lower competitive GPA, I knew I had to stand out more on my supplementary application. I had a general idea of what I wanted to portray as my experiences and who I am as an applicant. Still, my statement was sometimes too vague, or I didn’t provide enough evidence for specific points I made.

I decided to work with Anne because she is incredibly invested in the PA profession, and I knew she would provide a lot of knowledge and advice. Also, I have been following Anne for the past few years and used her resources to learn more about the PA role.”
